Depends.
There are two competing fixes to the problem caused by the loss of the
WinMx servers. One of them uses the hosts file, the other one doesn't.
So if you're using Vladd44's Pie Patch, it depends on the hosts file
entry. If you're using winmxworld.com 's dll patch, the hosts file
entry is ignored.
