The HD DVD and Blu-ray players decode the advanced audio formats to
6-channel PCM and output it over HDMI or multi-channel analog. Your
receiver doesn't need to do the decoding. It just needs to have an HDMI
or 5.1 analog input.
There are no receivers on the market that can decode the advanced audio
formats themselves yet. Even if there were, the raw bitstreams for these
formats can only be transmitted by HDMI 1.3, which is currently only
available on one player model from each format (the HD-XA2 for HD DVD,
and the PS3 for Blu-ray).
