Santa brought me the Yamada DVD-Mi220X and I'm very happy with it. As
others have observed, it plays almost any DivX type files, apart from MKV
and HD, and generally shows Srt and Sub subtitles. But, I've found there
are 2 types of Sub files - text based ones play fine, but the graphics
bitmap files don't, which I guess makes sense. Also, one film I had with
Srt subtitles wouldn't show them until I changed the SRT suffix to lower
case srt. I guess that tells us something about the Yamada filing system,
but it's rather quirky.
Anyway, the remaining issues are the font it uses for the subtitles, which
is horribly blocky and difficult to read, and the positioning of them just
below half way up the screen. I Googled to a thread where some German had
hacked a firmware update to correct both of these, but apparently it caused
other corruptions which I don't want to risk unless ...
a) is there a way to backup (or download) the existing firmware so's to
reverse the process if it don't work, or ...
b) anyone know of a tried & tested firmware update? (There's nothing yet on
the Umax / Yamada site.)
