Well, I'm not sure you'd want it. Along with the dropouts, it has
always had an issue in which the right side of the image has shimmering
vertical lines of dots for the first few seconds after turning it on
(Sony never found the issue, but it is so temporary, it's hard to
reproduce). Also, it now will not charge the battery (we have to use an
external charger), and I am not sure if the A/C adapter effectively
provides power...

But I'll ask my wife! :)

Well, what I did was simply to use WinDV and check the box that
separates the images into clips by a timecode threshold (I use 1
second). This automatically produced frame-perfect breaks in all but
the first clip on the tape (I do not include the first clip in my
comparrison).

Even though the camera I was using is not pro, doesn't the same apply,
since I was using FireWire? I do know that, by far, *most* bits were
identical. It's just that the number of uncorrectable errors were more
then I expected, for sure!
