Simply to tame the overall sound. I also have a Remo kick skin that has a
circular foam holding muffle built over it, which also helps. Everyone who
comes over loves the sound of the kit. Except my cymbals suck so the guys
usually bring their own, as I suggest.

I usually mic inside anywhere from 5cm to approx 8-10 inches from beater
skin. Also have a room mic (at3035 vocal mic) which captures the whole
kit/room from about 7 feet in front across the room. 2 overhead b5's and My
karma mic kit which is a seven piece, I got if off ebay for $150 and it is
FANTASTIC. They are for kick, toms and snares, they came with two overhead
condensers as well, but I prefer the B5's go figure. :)
