PCM is uncompressed. AC-3 is highly compressed.
PCM has very limited playing time. AC-3 is much less limited.
PCM is generally 2.0 channels. AC-3 is usually 5.1
PCM is generally reserved for music. AC-3 is better-suited to movie
soundtracks.
