Anything is possible. :)
Have you tried it on aanother player? I remember several posts about
the German R2 release in a German DVD forum. Some users complained
that their copy didn't have German subs for the foreign language
dialogue, whereas the majority had no problems having them displayed.
Sometimes it helped to go to the Language Menu and manually select
"Subtitles off" (go figure).
