Because otherwise you're stuck with hand-held shots or tripods.

I used to use my Steadicam JR all the time when my camera was small
enough to fit; the Z1 is too heavy and I really miss it. Having a
Steadicam permanently attached to the camera (folded up underneath when
not in use) was extremely useful.
