Rear projection is a display technology, and can be either SD or HD,
either 4:3 or widescreen.

LCD projection, LCoS (JVC's HD-ILA and Sony's SXRD) and TI's DLP are all
rear projection when used in self-contained TV sets (they are "front
projection" when they exist in a "projector" that you point at a screen).

All rear projection sets have at least some overscan. The manufacturers
cannot control the exact magnification of the optics coming off of tens
of thousands to millions of sets on a production line with such
uniformity to EXACTLY JUST fill the screen, so they overscan very
slightly and you don't see every single pixel.

Direct view technologies have zero overscan. Basically this includes
direct view LCD and Plasma panels.
