I was thinking tonight about technical quantum leaps that have hit me. I
remember where I was when I first heard a CD (I'm 40 this year so most of my
life I had put up with LPs, cassettes and some open reel). I knew I'd never
be happy with analogue again and it got me excited.
I remember making my first mobile phone call. For someone who remembers
feeding 2p coins into a BT phone box, you can't imagine how much of a leap
this technology was for me.
Then I remember first seeing DVD in my home. I knew I'd never be happy with
VHS again and it got me excited. (you can see where this is going!)
I remember first hearing 5.1 in my home - a second hand videologic setup but
I knew that mono and stereo would never do it for me again and it got me
excited.
Then I remember my first projector in my lounge, shooting at a lovely 10'
screen. No blackout, wrong seating position etc but I loved it and have
never enjoyed a film on my 28" TV since. I got excited.
Then last January we moved house and I got to convert the garage conversion
into a full time cinema. I got proper blackout, two rows of seats, properly
placed 5.1 and a lovely looking screen made out of MDF, Ice Storm Grey paint
and a home designed bracket which makes the screen "float" in front of the
darkened wall. I got excited.
Well two weeks ago I had another epiphany - HD. It's got me grinning all
over again. It's not just joy in the technology although I do appreciate
that but it's the step change in enjoyment of the whole experience. I love
having friends round, not to show off but so that we can enjoy movies as
they should be seen. All for £129 courtesy of M$'s Xbox add on.
I wonder what the next leap will be - anamorphic projection perhaps? but I
think all the big leaps hae gone now. They'll just be progression. Until
teleporting to work to avoid the M20 comes along I'm happy as Larry. I know
I'll grow and improve my system but if you want that "oh yes" factor, get HD
now on a big screen and be young again.
