A cheap LCD monitor is fine to get an idea of what the shot looks like,
but don't trust them for much. The picture will look substantially different
depending on angle that you look at it, so it can't be trusted for judging
color or contrast.
It would be useful to check that there is something on tape, or as a
courtesy
monitor for a director or client, as long as they know that it isn't to be
trusted.
If you have a lot of money, there are "broadcast quality" LCD monitors
that are much better and have the features you would expect from a
professional monitor. Even then I'm not sure how much they can be trusted.
