>>> And it'll just get worse as more people buy playstation and more
>>> blu-ray titles come out. Just this week, i already got the recent Ice
>>> Age 2 in blu-ray (and it's 20th century fox, so NO HD-DVD copy!)
This reminds me of DIVX, the old Pay Per View DVD format dreamed up by
Circuit City and some other providers.
Everywhere I looked I saw ads saying, 20th Century Fox will be releasing
content on DIVX formatted DVDS, so Star Wars, True Lies and Romancing the
Stone will never be released on 'open' DVD.
Disney was also a part of the DIVX group, so you weren't going to see Mary
Poppins on 'open DVD.
We all know how that turned out.
In retrospect, I wish DIVX had worked out.. someone eventually broke their
encoding scheme, so if DIVX had worked out, we would be getting movies from
the big screen to DIVX within 60 days from the end of general release, and
the cost would have been $3.99.
Honestly I don't know which format will win. I don't think the format will
take off until either Blue Ray for HD-DVD has become dominant.
I've always been an early adopter of new technology, but I'm waiting this
one out. Right now my money's on HD-DVD, only because the hardware price is
so much less than HD-DVD's.
