The DVD specifications seem to be a little fluid, and cheap chinese
clones don't always adhere to the finer points...

Hell yes. DVDshrink and DVDdecrypter make for a formidable team, but
depending on the type of protection used on the discs, you might also
want to look at RipIt4Me (which uses both of the above, as well as
FixVTS which gets rid of one of the protection methods)
RipIt4Me also has a one-click mode to allow you to back up, but for now,
i'd be tempted to use DVDshrink - run shrink, put the disc in, allow it
to do its initial scan of the disc, then select the "reauthor" mode -
then choose just the bits you want to put on a disc. It has its own
preview facility to help you choose the correct files :-)

RipIt4Me has its own installer now, and can check online to download the
latest version of FixVTS - to the best of my knowledge (having had it
installed for the last 4 months or so) it doesn't contain any malware of
any sort. If this is your first with FixVTS, try making a directory of
that name i.e. "c:\program files\fixvts" and throw the executable in
there. The preferences menu in RipIt4Me allow you to point to the right
location for the file.

As above :-)

The protection itself is just there to fuck up legitimate buyers of the
goods !
