Bruce,
My prior post begins with the assumption that you could / would consider
alternative software on your existing PC, as opposed to replacing the PC
hardware to run Premiere or other HDV editors.
If your intention is, instead, to keep your software and beef up the
hardware, then a core 2 duo / quad platform as Mike recommended or possibly
a high end AMD equivalent will get you the speed / performance you want.
Long rendering times are the big penalty if you are transcoding HDV down to
standard def DVDs when authoring in Encore. The extra hardware investment
will speed things up a lot, but I have been mostly disappointed when moving
stuff onto the quad Xeon in this regard. Most of the programs do NOT take
proper advantage of the parallelism, especially for rendering, but adding
more RAM and using 10k Raptors does certainly seem to help.
