Actually the "ceiling" is more like 53k because that is the speed the
phone companies are locked down to on a standard voice line. In fact
most phone companies will only guarantee voice quality which can
actually mean they only guarantee you up to about 9600.
Your modem is 56k to assure that the connection is maximized.
Sometimes V92 compression can give the appearance of a faster
up/download but in reality you can only pass what the limits of the
phone company are.
