The RIAA is a lobbying group. They don't actually control any music.

If Jobs (or someone else) convinces an exec at one of the "big four"
record labels, then things may change, no matter what the RIAA's lawyers
are saying at the time. (And they'll be preaching the same old song
right until the minute the labels officially change their minds, then
the RIAA will immediately change its tune, and pretend it never had any
different opinion.)

Since yesterday's open letter, different people working for different
parts of the music industry have said a wide variety of different
things. Officially, no company has said "yeah, he's right, let's drop
DRM", but nobody should expect a reaction like that. There have been
reports, however, of industry people starting to do analysis work to see
what the impact of elimianting DRM might be. This may not lead to
anything, but it is a necessary first step, no matter what happens.
