Mike,
I was disappointed with the performance, since the rendering quality of FCP
/ Compressor is excellent, and I prefer it for this and other reasons if
time is NOT of the essence. Apple offers XSERVE / render farm solutions
which can speed up rendering, but the cost/performance increase is hardly
compelling.
I'm a loyal and committed user of the Mac since its inception, and I despise
the bashing and holy wars surrounding platform zealots, but rendering speed
is the only remaining penalty I have personally experienced with the latest
and best Mac and FCP suite software.
