Yes, the sequence of shots at the bridge in "Saving Private Ryan" are
striking similar to a sequence in "The Bridge". I refer to composition,
camera angles, timing, lighting, the sequence of actions.
I repeat that I don't necessarily think he should not have done it.
There is a fine tradition in folk music of appopriating older songs,
adapting them, updating them, changing the texture, etc., that doesn't,
in my mind, compromise the artistic value of the new version. It's just
worth noting that a lot of artistic activity-- including, famously,
Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"-- involves re-envisioning an existing
work. On the other hand, in my mind, it makes Spielberg's work less
"daring" and "innovative" than, say, Richard Linklater or Stanley
Kubrick. Spielberg's strength is as a story-teller.
