I shoot only Sony Excellence in my Sony VX2000. I've never had a noticeable
drop-out (and that statement will probably spark a debate about dropouts
being endemic to miniDV). However, far more important than brand is how you
use the tape. I never re-use tapes -- they get used exactly twice: once
when I shoot and once when I capture to the computer. After that, they are
archived to a cool, dark, dry cabinet for storage. I keep my camcorder
clean (which does not necessarily mean using head cleaning tapes or the
like). I'm careful to avoid getting moisture in the camera, e.g. going from
one temperature extreme to another. I don't mix tape brands on the oft
chance that they might use incompatible lubricants and gum up my camcorder.
