It was a form factor issue. 12" versus 5.25"
A 12" pressing has more bad disc stampings per 1000 than a smaller
form factor pressing does. Regardless of laser read technology, the
physics of stamped plastics and warpage factors, etc. come in to play.
They are hot stamped wads of plastic that get their pits metallized
AFTER they get stamped. Those hot platters coming of the mold stamps
can warp and pass that warp on to the backing platter they receive.
At 12", that warpage can be significant, and the laser head tracking
outer edge wobbles of over 1/4 inch compared to a mere 40 mils at
5.25" form factor.
Hard drives are moving that way too. There are virtually no more
5.25" form factor drives made or sold any longer. Soon we'll all be
on laptop form factor drives.
It was for a slightly different reason though. MTBF. A larger hard
drive takes a lot more energy to spool the platters up and keep them
up to speed. Harder on the drive, and harder on the PC's PS as well.
