I don't think this is terribly surprising. It is a combination of
the effects of advances in the technology of manufacturing
magnetic tape, as well as innovative application of tricks of
human perception combined with complex error detection
and correction schemes learned from the computer industry.
There is quite a lot going on under the hood of DV to make
it appear as foolproof and reliable as we perceive it to be.
I suspect that we all take it for granted and most users are
not even aware of the impressive technology they should
be grateful for.
