Multi-format players are not really "two systems patched together".
It's one laser that adjusts its beam based on if the disk is blu-ray
or HD-DVD since each format has its data recorded at slightly
different depths on the service. The basic hardware components for a
multi-format player are the same as for an HD-DVD or blu-ray player so
I wouldn't be surprised to see the prices of all three start to
converge pretty quickly.
