Yes, this was an issue 10 years ago, but for some reason, It STILL
revolves in my head and STILL avoid mixing brands. Although I know
it's not an issue any more, I'll hesitate when I'll stick anything
else other than Sony. In a decade from now I may get over it.

3 years ago I had a terrible experience with Fujifilm miniDV. I
traveled some 200 miles east to shoot some travel footage. I picked
Fujifilm purely foe esthetic reasons: The cassette transparent window
stretches from one end to the other and you can see both remaining and
used tape. Just to realize at the end of the day that only 9/10ths of
the picture is black and sometimes 1/10th of video might flash on the
far left side of the screen... with no audio at all. The heads on my
then Canon GL-1 were cleaned the day before.
Perhaps I wasn't lucky and got a rare bad tape. By all means, I'll
avoid FujiFilm miniDV although I know that the odds to get a similar
bad tape in the future may be inexistent. I haven't had any problems
with Sony and nothing would justify for me to change for something
else. I may get this odd dropout here and there inherent to the miniDV
tight tolerances but generally, it's ok.
