For (computer) 4mm tapes we were told it was best to run them through
the drive at normal speed a couple of times, which basically meant
record 1 time, then playback. Then use for backups or whatever.

I don't remember if we were told to run miniDV tapes a couple
of times before using. I would do so if that was the recommendation,
then do what you do, which is record once, playback once.
