At one time or another, I've transcoded 720p and 1080i .m2t HDV files
to almost every conceivable commonly used format, including those
suitable for playback on the Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable) as well
as Flash Video (.flv), although I've always maintained the widescreen
16:9 aspect ratio. Essentially, you can convert the file to any video
format that you wish, even downscaling it to SD if necessary.

I don't know what format you've got the data in right now, perhaps
it's raw .m2t or perhaps you're using the Cineform intermediate codec,
or even something else (Avid, perhaps), but if you're not certain at
this point in time exactly what you want to do with the file, or what
you might want to do with it in the future, and you've got the disk
space, save it as an uncompressed .avi. (This is where 750 GB external
FireWire-attached HDDs come in handy.) At least that way, you'll have
it to play with in the future.

Bill, an easy way to create MPEG-4 AVC/AAC files is to spring for the
$29.99 Pro version of QuickTime. MPEG-4 AVC/AAC files created with
QuickTime Player Pro will playback just fine in the free version of
the QuickTime Player program, as well as the free VideoLAN VLC media
player program and any other multimedia player program, including good
old Windows Media Player, as long as you've got the appropriate codecs
installed. If necessary, reduce the frame size (dimensions) so as to
ensure smooth playback on a variety of systems - if you're going to
distribute your work to others, especially via the Net.
