I solved the problem.
After trying many many combinations of arrow-down and hit enter, I
decided to read the entire manual again. The answer didn't appear
until page 43, just two pages before the end of the book, nor was it
clearly related, but it was the closest thing to a reset I could find.
The solution they listed related to Parental Controls. The
instructions were to turn off the DVD player, remove the disc, turn it
back on with no disc, then press Play and Stop simultaneously on the
front of the player--not on the remote--for three seconds.
I did exactly this and my picture popped back up instantly, and I was
able to continue with my adjustments to the screen.
The Samsung manual, by the way, is the most annoying manual I've ever
read. Nowhere in the manual does it tell you why the remote has
numbers on it--which do not do anything. Nowhere in the manual does it
define "progressive scan." A typical item is like this: An
illustration points to the Disc Menu button and the caption is, "This
is for viewing the disc menu." Well, duh. What's the difference
between the Disc Menu, the Title Menu and the Menu? The remote could
come with about half the buttons it has and work much better. Only
about half the buttons are explained in a way that any novice could
understand. I've had my DVD player for four years and I still don't
know why or how to use most of the buttons.
And if I did, I doubt that I would want to.
Anyway, that's how the problem was resolved--accidentally. And btw, I
emailed Samsung for customer service the day before I joined and
posted to this group. I never heard a word back from them.
Go figure.
