Well, the problem was the printer. It was a lemon, plain and simple.
I wrote the Canon help desk, from their site, which turned out to be
a complete waste of time: these guys don't have a clue. After telling
me to 'try printing in high-res mode", they recommended I move
to glossy printable media.
Luckily Canon has a toll free number (1-800-OK-CANON).
Luckily again, afteer waiting on hold for half an hour, I spoke
with someone who actually knew a thing aor two about their
products! He thought the print head was not positioning
itself properly when printing a DVD. Returned the printer,
unpacked the new one, and guess what ? IT DIDNT WORK
EITHER!!! This one had a faulty print head saddle; the gears
and/or belt was defective. Went back to the store, tried
one last time, and voila, I now have gorgeous printed DVD's!
