AVG has improved apparently* but for now you can get Kaspersky for free
as part of an AOL initiative (you don't need to be with AOL to get it) -
that's pretty much top-end of the virus checkers.
You need to give them an email address for the free licence code, but
i've received no spam from them over the last 4 or 5 months since
getting it:

*I haven't tested the new version of AVG myself, but as of maybe 6
months ago, every machine I was called in to fix that had AVG installed
had at least one virus on it - my first move is to scan with Sysclean
from Trend - particularly if it had Norton or AVG on it :-}
