My angry letter about spike and mike....
I saw online and ad from the spike and mike animation fest that they
were seeking submissions for their fest
I emailed them a 10 second joke cartoon I did. I get an email back
saying " we like it, we're gonna use it in our fest!" I was so
excited! I wrote them back "For real? My cartoon is in Spike and
Mike?!?!" They emailed back "yes its in."
I couldn't believe it! I called them up and asked when I could see
the fest. The woman on the phone said it was definitely in and that
they were going to email me a contract.
A contract! My dreams come true. It took a while for me to realize
the contract was in my BULK email folder- not my regular inbox- so I
didn't return it right away. As I read the contract I had some
issues, I definitely WANTED my film in their fest BUT I also wanted to
be able to use it in a larger project. I called them up and they
agreed to let me change certain portions of the contract. They also
said they needed to the contract ASAP and could I "next day mail" it.
I did- it cost me- I don't remember- just under 40 bucks to mail off
the contract and DVD. The DVD was my "best of" animation reel- the
cartoon they said they wanted was on it. I assumed they'd "rip" the
dvd and take that short out for their show.
They recommended I come to comic- con for its premiere. I asked
(email) that since I had a film in would I get any special rates on
admission or hotels. They said they didn't know but would get back to
me. I got an email right before comic con saying "see you there, Are
you ready for the Gauntlet?"
I thought, "the Gauntlet? What's that?"
I took time off from work- bought a plane ticket and booked a hotel
room. I'd been more into filmmaking and corporate animation than
comicbooks for over a decade (gotta live don't I?) BUT I loved comic
books until college and had heard of comic con for a long time, so I
was very very excited to have an excuse to go.
Once in San Diego at the con the first thing I did was go to the
Spike and Mike booth and say hi to the folks I'd been conversing
with. After I told them who I was one dude looked spooked and looked
down in a mixture of guilt and suspicion. He turned away and picked up
a book and pretended to be too busy to talk to me.
"WHAT the heck is going on here?" I thought.
Saturday night- I am jittery in anticipation. The room that was
showing the spike and mike cartoons was showing an "Avengers" cartoon
before S&M so I went to that and stayed in my seat to make sure I got
a spot at the show (the booklet said "arrive early to Spike and
Mike... it usually gets full early"
They played the standard spike and mike shorts (the ones I've seen to
dozens of times before, Dr Tran.... No neck Joe.... ) then... they
announced the gauntlet... the announcer said the audience should boo
or cheer to see which films would get into next years actual spike and
mike show.
I was dumbfounded, noone told me about this! I was told repeatedly
that i was definitely IN the spike and mike show, not in some
gauntlet!
They played mine first... and guess what
they played the WRONG ONE!!!! The one I sent was kinda gross and
definitely geared towards the spike and mike crowd. The one they
played was NOT "spike and mike" material at all- it just happened to
be on the DVD I mailed them.
I got booed.... and I stormed out of the screening room.
I confronted them the next day and when they saw me they walked away-
wouldn't talk to me. The lying mother f- ers set me up to have someone
to be laughed at!
I've thought about suing- after all they emailed me a contract
(promising me $500) and their lies cost em plane fare and hotel costs.
Take it from me, do NOT Trust Spike and Mike!
