As usual with this stuff it usually comes down to personal
preference. At our PA facility we have 1 suite running Vegas 7, and 2
others are running PPro 2 and I really like both programs a lot
(although I definitely lean towards the Vegas.)
But I've got to say, as we are in the process of replacing our other 4
editors that we use as introductory machines for the adults & students
(currently 2 aging Screenplays & 2 Pinnacle Studio 9's--I never
bothered with the Pinnacle upgrades because I've not been especially
thrilled with the software), I picked up a copy of the lower end of
both Premiere (Premiere Elements) & Vegas (Vegas Movie Studio) and
have been completely blown away. In the past, I always kind of lumped
the consumer level editing software with the Windows Movie Maker &
iMovie's of the world, but Adobe and Sony have really packed a ton of
stuff into these lower-grade systems. So depending on what kind of
stuff you need from your NLE, you may even want to consider Movie
Studio or Elements which can be had for under $100 each.
