I'm looking to buy a Mac to run Final Cut Express and eventually FCP. Right
now video is just a hobby. I'll be shooting local events, making
mini-documentaries on local people and weddings in the future..
Looking at the Mac options I'm not sure which would make the most sense.
Having recently had a monitor catch fire on me, I know I don't want an iMac.
They may be safe etc, but that's not going to sway me. Plus,. I just don't
like the conceptual idea of a computer and monitor all in one.
Another option would be go with the Mac Pro. However, spending $2500 for a
model that's been out for some time doesn't appeal to me either. These
computers depreciate fast enough as it is. Chances are Apple will have a
new Pro series out before long.
A friend of mine suggested buying a used P4 with plenty of ram and disk
space for around $600-$700. He said Final Cut doesn't run all that much
faster on the Pro series. Might this be the way to go? Or, is there a
major payoff in speed and convenience in buying a Mac Pro computer?
I'm also thinking the money I save on a computer I might put to use buying a
better camera.
