I may have missed something on the ng, but I don't think the exact same
problems exist on the Sony players. I have, however, seen Sony users
complaining about sync that puts the audio *ahead* of the video. On top
of that there is the persistent issue of people misinterpreting a bad
master as a fault with the sync chip.
I highly doubt that Sony and Pioneer share the same firmware. I think
they are both tier 1 manufacturers (i.e. they produce their own parts).
As for the problems arising on some DVDs and not others: the most
reasonable explanation I have read is that the sync problem serves to
emphasize a
mastering problem. Hence, if a DVD is well-mastered, a 2-frame sync
problem would be virtually undetectable. However, if the DVD master is
out by 2 frames and the sync problem puts it out by another 2 frames,
many people will be able to detect the 4-frame audio/video differential.
