I think the recent Memorex drives are rebadged LG's. I have
the LG GSA-H22N which is probably the same drive as yours.
It is a good drive with very good burn quality, but it is
a bit lacking in media support. What type of media are you
trying to burn? If the drive doesn't have a write strategy
for that particular media ID, it will default to 4x. Try
burning some commonly availabe 16X media like Verbatim +R
16x. If you find it still burns at 4x, you probably don't
have DMA enabled for the DVD drive or possibly for your
hard-drive.
Make sure you have the latest chipset drivers for your
mainboard. Check that you have an 80 wire IDE cable and
not the older 40 wire type. Check the master/slave jumpers
on the back of the drive are configured correctly. Make sure
that DMA is enabled for your hard drive. If you are running
Windows, you can check the DMA settings in Control Panel -
System - Device Manager.
