Ok, normally I ignore the whole Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD war but since this
is in a UK newsgroup and it normally doesn't come up in here I'll
actually give my 2¢. First off Wal-Mart has not gotten rid of HD-DVDs
here in the US, however I don't feel people should shop there until
they fix up their company but that's a different topic.
Second the first dual decks that play both Blu-Ray AND HD-DVD as well
as regular DVD and every form of VCD are coming out on the market. So
I feel that both will continue to live as most people (average
consumer) would rather have a choice and be able to play both discs.
The average consumer doesn't care about the format war they only care
about getting the most for less and if you put them between the best
players for both formats and a dual player they will choose the dual
almost every time.
Third if one format wins I think that it will be HD-DVD not based on
capabilities, picture quality or personal preference but simply
because the people that don't know, or care enough to look into specs
and compare the two will buy because, "hey it's HD-DVD, I already have
DVD and this will play my old DVDs as well as the new ones" where the
main part is they already have DVD and will feel more comfortable
buying a product with the same name... even if it didn't play their
old discs.
This is based on the normal American consumer mentality, your country
may differ but lets face it, if the tech really mattered Beta would
have won, SVHS would have replaced VHS, and we'd all be watching
HD-LaserDiscs since the 90's.
