DEFINITELY 3/4" U-Matic!!! MUCH better than any VHS.
In my early TV days, we shot and edited on U-Matic. It was much better
than VHS, and while not up to BetaCam, a first generation U-Matic tape
can look pretty good.
A quick aside: I lost the 3/4" master tape of one episode of a series
I produced. I had to be satisifed with a VHS dub of it. One day when I
was cleaning out my back porch (enclosed, but succeptible to blowing
snow and rain, and much heat), I found a 3/4" dub of that master tape,
not in a case. It had been wet, and the label was faded from heat and
sun. I carefully re-climatized it, and tried it in a 3/4" machine.
(Despite what another poster said, I have 7 of them in my facility
that all still work well). Lo and behold, the tape looked stunningly
good. I made a DVCAM safety dub, but the 3/4" still plays fine. It was
a pretty robust format for its time.
