Well a positive point for me was Jim himself. He looked like he could and
would do some damage. I haven't really got that impression from any actor
since our Sean. The emphasis on the card game seemed to be quite
Fleming-esque to me. But I agree it was not flawless.
I felt the same as you but about a Brosnan "Bond" film where he was
running along a gangway, automatic in each hand, saturating an enemy with
fire, fairly ineffectively as I recall. All the finesse of a US drive-by
shooting, not 007 at all in my view.
