Adding to what all the others already said: a filter does not cause any
extra flare. You have to keep the light falling on the lens with a shade.
One thing a filter can cause is reflections, and only when you shoot
against the sun. Light can be bounced off the front of the lens, and
reflected back against the filter, causing weird streaks on the fiter.
Another worry you have is that with some filterholders, bright light can
leak in from the back, and this light can be bounced aginst the filter
causing streaks again.
A bigger worry you have is dirt on your filter, because your camera will
have a huge depth-of-field, and if your aperture is at F16, you can see the
dirt on the filter. Again, keeping light off the filter, will reduce this
problem.
My recommendation is to screw on a UV-filter and keep an eye on the light
falling on the front of your lens, because having the coatings of your lens
repaired, is very expensive.
