I recently changed to a JVC 32" LCD and after a few weeks also decided to
update my Pioneer 636 DVD player (a good one in its day)
The 636 was connected via Scart and the JVC did its own upscaling.

I bought a Sony DVP-NS76H based on recomendations from several sites on the
web and connected it via HDMI which gives me a 720p picture.

A Massive improvement. The Sony was very much better, not certain if it is
the HDMI connection or the Sony upscaling or both but it was 80 quid well
spent. Especially considering the Pioneer 636 cost me well over 300 quid a
few years back.

Even the wife was impressed and believe me that is not easy :-)
