yeah. It should be a decent player and certainly (expectedly) better
than DVD.
But there are always little things that come up after launch. Like,
teh Chroma Upsample Error in DVDs or Macroblocking in upconverting. Or
little features like Divx playback, DVD+R and DVD-R readability (one of
my players only does +R), or PAL<->NTSC conversions, Region Free hacks,
etc. etc.
And AIUI, the HD-DVD discs will be 1080p, so the players will have to
downsample to 720p or 1080i, unless you have an HDTV with 1080p INPUTS
(which is what i'm waiting for to upgrade to an SXRD). I'll assume
that there will be various chips that manage that of varying quality,
as well as the codecs themselves.
My Sony DVP-S7000 had the motherboard switches for region-free and
remove-macrovision. I bought it specifically b/c of those switches
($1400 IIRC).
For these reasons (and others), I'll wait until the first round of
players is out and reviewed and then possibly jump in. The "jump in"
is buying a 1080p TV and a player (or two if it looks like a prolonged
format war a la SACD and DVDA).
