How about this: do the experiment and report the results in this
thread?
If they were mine, I'd probably do it, but I'm a putterer and fixer at
heart :-)
Also, if you aren't going to get your money back from these anyway,
there's no loss to you (except a bit of time and maybe a bruised or
scratch or two).
