DVR desk capabilities - with hard drives / ethernet

I am on the edge of purchasing a new DVR deck and have a few questions.

Purchasing one with a hard drive
- can I record from a DVD disk to the hard drive to later save that video to
a new disk?
- how easily can I join multiple videos? Looking to move family videos from
those small disks to standard DVDs.
- Do the units have decent editing capability? How hard is it to cut'n'paste
segments from the different video clips and append them together? I assume
that varies by brand, which brand is the most flexible?
- I have found that recorded disks on my current DVR device compresses a LOT
better than if I record the same input using my PC. Will video clips copied
to the hard drive from disks and rejoined to a new DVD get this better
compression, or will this be more of a copy process where the resulting new
DVD will retain the compression of the original?

Units with ethernet ports
- are these devices setup to receive streaming video from the internet, or
from a server I setup?

Thanks in advance for your input!!!!!
