I had not used readcd and did not know how to define the device. I
have since then read about readcd and run your test. The speed
was identical to that given by dd.

For comparison I give you the leading results from readcd when
applied to two different drives:

First for a BenQ drive which claims 5x read speed for DVD-RAM:

Read speed: 6925 kB/s (CD 39x, DVD 5x).
Write speed: 2770 kB/s (CD 15x, DVD 2x).
Capacity: 2236704 Blocks = 4473408 kBytes = 4368 MBytes = 4580 prMB
Sectorsize: 2048 Bytes
Copy from SCSI (1000,0,0) disk to file '/dev/null'

Now, for the Pioneer 112D which also claims 5x read:
Read speed: 2770 kB/s (CD 15x, DVD 2x).
Write speed: 2770 kB/s (CD 15x, DVD 2x).
Capacity: 2236704 Blocks = 4473408 kBytes = 4368 MBytes = 4580 prMB
Sectorsize: 2048 Bytes

As you can see the Pioneer does read at 2x.

I tried the force options you suggested by none increased the
write speed to that achieved by other drives using the same
blanks or that speed achieved by growisofs.
