I know it is impolite to mention growisofs here, but that program
does write the disk at 16x. It starts at 4x and ends at 18x, or so,
with an average of 11x.

Linux is all I have. If you point me to where linux sets a 16 byte
limit I will go in and change that, recompile the kernel, and
run the test again. I am running 2.6.20.
I any case, cdrecord seems to self-limit the write speed, I suppose
to be conservative. I have run 100 or so of the Verbatim 16x through
the drive with growisofs and have not had a single coaster.

I responded to an offer from Sun for a free copy of Solaris several
months ago. Nothing ever came of that. It was only a matter of
curiosity since I want to support linux and would not consider
Solaris as a permanent option.
