A program that does ask the drive may not suffer from incorrect answers
from the drive.

Solaris is easy to install and Solaris is free!

Cdrecord asks the drive and gets a wrong answer at one place and
no answer at another place.
For the wrong answer case I would need access to such a machine.
For the no answer case we need to find out whether this is a Linux
kernel bug or a drive firmware bug.
