Not surprising. Many recent Apex are crap. The last 2 Apex I've come
across, one smoked up before the warranty went. The replacement also
smoked up and I fixed it by replacing a $0.10 diode in the power
supply. Still works 2 years going now. Still won't play anything
that isn't pressed.
Second Apex were LOUD. When it plays, it makes enough noise to drown
out my normally noisy PC. (PC has dual Delta 120mm 235 CFM fans,
which ranks up with dust buster in noise level)

No such thing as inexpensive and verastile player.
you could try www.videohelp.com under the dvd player for reviews of
almost all DVD players.
