And in a nut shell, that's the fucking problem! VHS is actually on a 30
year run(it debuted in 1976) and is still not "officially" dead. By
that, I mean pre-recorded VHS movies are still being made and recordable
tapes are still readily available. But the format is OBVIOUSLY on the
verge of extinction. LD was nothing more than a niche format, even at
it's peak, but it managed to last about 18-19 years. Yet here we are
with DVD, which has been more successful than VHS and LD combined(!) and
is only 8 years old to boot, but yet it's time to lay the format to
rest?!?! WTF?! I have no problem replacing DVD with a new format, but do
it within a 10 year period? Fuck that. And technically, it's only been
about 5 years for me since I got my first DVD player in late 1999. And
believe me, it's even less time for *A LOT* of other consumers out
there. Imagine if you bought your first DVD player in 2003 or 2004...
This is how long a good 40 to 50 million people in the United States
waited to buy a DVD player. This isn't about giving the consumers what
they "want." This is about corporate greed in Hollywood and trying to
get a new copy protection system on the video market. Nothing more.
Even Betamax, which got it's ass kicked by VHS and was considered a huge
failure for Sony managed to last about 10 years or so(from 1975 to
1985). Something to ponder..
