Rick,

It certainly is a great convenience to go directly from the camera to your
server without a format conversion if you don't mind paying for the hi def
functionality and then not using it. A number of camcorders from Sony, JVC,
Panasonic have been offering direct mpeg2 capture in standard def video for
quite a few years, and even the ill-fated Sony MicroMV camcorders also
offered mpeg2 format recording back in 2001. You might also possibly also
consider one of the DVD camcorders if your goal is take mpeg2 directly to
your server with little or no editing. The VOB files which they produce go
immediately to mpeg2 files with a much smaller camcorder purchase price,
perhaps half of the cost of the HD-SR1 or less.
