they weren't short-lived standards. superbeta was around from 1984
(also, the ultimate vcr, the sl-hf1000, incorporated the B1SHB mode).
superbeta was around through the last production year of betamax (1995?).
and while ed beta (of which I still own 3) had only two available models
in the states, it was around for many years in japan.
they weren't as short-lived "standards" as you stated.
i still use my ed beta equipment, and lament that my edw-10f camcorder
died (dried out caps, i think) a few years ago.
