Canon and Sony are noted for using optical/mechanical image
stabilization (vs. electronic in other brands). This is accomplished
with a pair of servo-driven glass surfaces forming a prism, with
liquid between them. Your symptoms sound like there is an air-
bubble inside the servo-driven prism assembly.
The bubble is bad enough by itself, but it may also be an indication
that some of the liquid has leaked out (if the air displaced it). Whatever
that liquid is, it can't be very good for the mechanics or electronics
inside your camcorder. :-(
