Actually if you want to be pedantic, both statements are untrue
because both are too general. There are obviously people who do see
DVD ripping as a legitimate use of DVD drives, and even if one person
has that point of view it would invalidate my statement. There are
also people who don't, so the polar opposite implied by your statement
would also be untrue -- the legal threats from the MPAA against
authors of ripping programs are testament to that.

However, my point was that DVD manufacturers aren't likely to
advertise their DVD ripping speeds given the hostile environment
created by the MPAA. Nobody in a drive manufacturer's marketing dept
is insane enough to put stuff like "Rips movie DVDs 4 times faster
than the competition!" in their ads or specs. The lawyers would be
let off their chains before the ink was dry.
